Springfield Museum of Art

Volunteer Service Program

Volunteers contribute their time and talents to the many activities and events sponsored by the Springfield Museum of Art.

A variety of volunteer opportunities is available. Each offers the opportunity to contribute your knowledge and skills during the hours that you have available.

Types of Volunteer Opportunities
  • Docent tour guides are volunteers who have completed a training program that enables them to lead group tours of the museum's permanent collections and special exhibits. Docents also assist with the art school's summer camp, the Muse Machine program, and school outreach projects.
  • The Gift Gallery and Art Reference Library are staffed with volunteers who assist visitors with the museum's selection of gift items, and maintain the museum's repository of monographs and periodicals.
  • Special events and exhibition openings offer the volunteer various service options from greeting guests to tending bar and assisting with refreshments.
  • The landscaped lawns and flower beds that greet museum visitors provide those volunteers with a green thumb the opportunity to work with master gardeners in designing and maintaining the beautiful gardens that surround the museum complex.

Volunteer Scheduling & Benefits
Flexible Hours
Volunteer hours can be arranged to fit your busy schedule. The museum's many scheduled events take place on weekdays and weekends during both daytime and evening hours, providing you with flexible scheduling options. The number of hours that you volunteer is up to you; it is hoped that each volunteer will contribute at least thirty service hours every six months.

Docent Training Classes
Those individuals who are interested in leading tours of the museum will complete a ten week docent training program.

Recognition & Benefits
A yearly Volunteer Recognition Reception is held to honor the important contribution of each museum volunteer.

Special benefits extended to each volunteer include the opportunity to attend special tours and excursions sponsored by the museum. Volunteers are also eligible to receive a 20 percent discount on purchases of art supplies or Gift Gallery items.
